Star Trek's legend pile is now fully visible

With previews wrapped, Star Trek brings a huge pool of commander options. EDHREC counts 100 new legendary creatures in the main set and 97 more in the Commander decks [1]. That is a lot to sort through, so the site's writer picked out the standouts for power, fun, or both.

A few early picks:

  • Dr. Beverly Crusher doubles up lifegain triggers and grows with +1/+1 counters, which suits a mono-white lifegain deck. The writer warns that tracking doubled triggers gets tedious outside Arena [1].
  • Captain Kathryn Janeway is a 2/3 that costs the same as Path of Discovery and lets you play an additional land each turn. Her trigger also works with tokens, so token makers give you lots of explore triggers [1].
  • Q, Stacking the Deck is a meme-deck commander: you run one nonland card and exile it whenever Q enters [1].

Wizards also published a personal feature on what Star Trek means to its staff and community [2].

Captain Jean-Luc Picard on a budget

If you want something more focused, EDHREC has a mono-white tokens list built around Captain Jean-Luc Picard. The 99 costs about $30, not counting the commander, which was still at presale prices when the article ran [4].

Picard costs three mana. He makes an extra token whenever you cast a creature or Spacecraft spell. Once you control seven or more Officers, you can tap them to search for a Spacecraft that enters with seven charge counters [4].

The list keeps the Spacecraft package to six, so each one is worth finding. Named picks include Rescue Skiff (returns a key card from your graveyard) and Lumen-Class Frigate, which gives your team +2/+2 alongside Picard. One more Spacecraft finds a legendary creature and protects your tapped legends. Extinguisher Battleship is there as a sweeper you can cheat into play [4].

Klingon Fury precon lands November 13

EDHREC has also put out a guide to Klingon Fury, one of the Star Trek Commander preconstructed decks. It lists a release date of November 13, 2026 [3]. The guide promises to cover the decklist, the commanders and whether the deck is worth buying. The excerpt we have doesn't include those details, so check the full guide before deciding [3].

That date matters if you want the deck for a game night. It's also the first day of MagicCon: Atlanta, which runs November 13–15 [7].

Two odd corners worth a look

Not every Star Trek card is a mainstream commander. EDHREC has two pieces on the quirkier end.

The City on the Edge of Forever phases out your opponents' permanents. It also leaves a 0/1 Human that stops anything from phasing back in. The writer's jankiest idea is to lock away Teferi's Protection or Clever Concealment if an opponent casts one. Another is to pair the Human with Taniwha, so you decide when your lands and serpent come back [8].

H.M.S. Bounty, Unlikely Timeship is a legendary Spacecraft, so it can be a commander. It tutors for a Whale when it enters. Once stationed, it becomes a 3/4 flyer that draws on combat damage. It can also give an extra turn if you control a Whale. The author calls it underwhelming as a general-purpose card but fun as the centre of a Whale typal meme deck [9].

Rise of the Polygons Secret Lair for Extra Life

Wizards' yearly Extra Life Secret Lair is Rise of the Polygons, with a 3D-console look. It contains Balefire Dragon, Big Score, Young Pyromancer, Sword of Truth and Justice and an Elemental token [5][7].

It costs $39.99 non-foil or $49.99 foil. Half the purchase price supports Extra Life and Seattle Children's Hospital [5]. It's on sale at MagicSecretLair.com from November 16 to November 30 [5]. EDHREC lists the start as 9 a.m. PT on the 16th [6]. Limited quantities will be at the MagicCon: Atlanta merch booth from November 13 to 15 [5].

MTG Arena gets matching items from November 16–30: a Secret Lair Sleeve Bundle (3,000 gems), a Sleeve Bundle (1,800 gems) and a Sticker Emote (800 gems) [7].

Commander corner

With nearly 200 new legends across the set and the Commander decks, there is plenty to build around. The first brews lean toward focused archetypes: lifegain, landfall, tokens and Spacecraft [1][4]. Picard's budget list is a cheap way to try the Spacecraft theme while prices are settling. If you're buying the Klingon Fury precon on November 13, read the full guide first, since our excerpt doesn't cover the decklist [3].
