Star Trek Commanders Roundup: Tendi Ramp, Beginner Picks and Best Non-Legends
A Star Trek-heavy day: D'Vana Tendi as a big-mana commander, beginner-friendly generals, the best nonlegendary creatures, plus a Magic movie casting note and a deckbuilding contest.

D'Vana Tendi as a flexible untapper
EDHREC's deck tech for D'Vana Tendi, Optimistic Ensign treats her as a more flexible Voltaic Key or Manifold Key sitting in the command zone. She is a 3/3 that taps to untap another target permanent, and she can surveil 1 as a mana sink [1].
Because she isn't limited to one permanent type, the author pairs her with ramp like Wild Growth and rocks like Gilded Lotus. The idea is to untap an enchanted land or a mana rock for extra mana, much like Arbor Elf [1]. The build aims for a one-mana ramp spell on turn one, Tendi on turn two, then a four-mana rock on turn three. Thran Dynamo is the best of those, with Hedron Archive and Ring of the Lucii as other options [1].

Simple Star Trek commanders for newer players
A second EDHREC piece looks at Star Trek commanders from the main set and the Commander decks that suit beginners. Each one is picked for a core concept it can teach [2].
- Deanna Troi, Psychic Counsel puts +1/+1 counters on creatures you play. It teaches fair combat-based aggro at a measured pace, and it leads naturally into counter synergies later [2].
- Trelane, Squire of Gothos can run as a Voltron deck. That teaches Auras, Equipment and commander damage, and also the risk of overextending into removal [2].
- Data, New Life is one of several picks for learning card draw. The article notes it has no built-in protection or evasion [2].
The author also points back to Spock, Logical Choice from an earlier article [2].

The best nonlegendary creatures
Star Trek is full of legendary creatures, so EDHREC ranked the nonlegendary ones worth playing, including cards from the Commander decks [3]. A few from the list:
- MACO Strike Team: a one-mana 2/1. Whenever an opponent targets any creature you control, you get a tapped 1/1 Officer token [3].
- Overflow Submatrix: a three-mana 3/3 Borg. Once per turn it lets you cast an artifact creature from your graveyard. That creature gets a finality counter [3].
- Holo-Engineer: makes a 3/3 Illusion artifact creature when it enters. After that it replaces tokens you would create with that many 3/3 Illusions [3].
Artifact decks look like the biggest winners, since they have plenty of enters and sacrifice effects to reuse [3].

Borg and Kirk builds from Star City Games
Star City Games' Spike Feeders column has decklists for strange new Star Trek commanders. One is built around Locutus of Borg, an artifact-heavy list that includes Hugh, First of Many, The Borg Queen, Borg Cube, Overflow Submatrix, Skullclamp and Sol Ring [9].
The other is led by Captain Kirk, Boldly Going and uses a pile of Star Trek crew, including Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Chief Montgomery Scott. Together they show how much of the Star Trek card pool leans on artifacts and creature types [9].

Mystery Booster Commander combos, plus news and events
EDHREC's Wombo Combo ranks the combo cards from Mystery Booster Commander Edition by data from EDHREC and Commander Spellbook. The set has 60 new cards and a rulebreaker mechanic that bypasses some color identity restrictions [4]. Ekthi, Contaminator Priest has 17 combos, The Muckslinger Gang has 24, and Olag and Miau, New Friends has 28 [4].
Outside the card pool, Maya Hawke has reportedly joined the Magic movie. Her role hasn't been announced. Matt Johnson is directing [5][6]. EDHREC's November Archidekt contest asks for a deck with a commander that has fewer than 500 EDHREC decks and wasn't first released in 2026 [8]. New Perspectives grant applications for MagicCon Tokyo close on November 17, 2026 [7].
