Star Trek Update Bulletin: New Rules, Creature Types and a Typal Twist
Wizards has published the Star Trek rules bulletin. It adds new keywords and a pile of creature types, and it changes one Oracle text. Here is what Commander players should know.

What the bulletin changes
Wizards of the Coast posted the Star Trek Update Bulletin on Nov 6, 2026. It summarises the rules changes arriving with the set, and the official rules win if the two ever disagree [1].
Three new keyword actions or abilities get their own rules: face a dilemma, assimilate and beam me up [1]. The set also brings four new ability words: Battlefront, Federation, Seek out and Strange new worlds [1]. There is one new artifact type, Communicator [1].
One rule is new and one is updated. Rule 208.3 now makes clear that a noncreature object outside the battlefield only has power and toughness if the printed values aren't part of any of its abilities [1].

A new kind of replacement effect
The second ability of Kira Nerys, Firebrand is the first of its kind. It is a replacement effect that lets creatures you control enter tapped and attacking under certain conditions [1]. That needed a new rule, 508.4e [1].
Wizards calls it an exciting mechanical exploration. For Commander players, the rule is the part to watch. Cards that put creatures onto the battlefield attacking already exist. This is a different route, and new rules text like this often hints at designs we will see again [1].
The bulletin doesn't spell out the exact conditions in the part we have, so check the card text before you plan around it.

Lots of new creature types, and a typal angle
The bulletin says this release adds more new creature types than we've had in a long time [1]. The list includes Android, Bajoran, Borg, Klingon, Romulan, Tribble, Vulcan, Officer and many more [1].
EDHREC's typal review says the set pulls in two opposite directions. The Federation side rewards variety, and the Borg side strips creature types away [3]. The federation mechanic counts creature types among non-Borg creatures you control [3]. Changelings don't work well with it, because the count excludes Borg and a changeling has every type [3].
The reviewer thinks it suits decks built around one deep creature type, where many creatures carry several types [3].
Cards and commanders to look at
The EDHREC typal review calls Sarek, Federation Ambassador a solid commander for Advisor typal. Advisors have support across many planes and subtypes [3]. The same review notes that Persistent Petitioners all share one typing, so Sarek is better suited to a general Advisor build [3].
Infinite Diversity is also part of the review. The writer says they aren't a Star Trek fan but like the art and flavor [3].
For modal-spell fans, EDHREC's Seven of Nine piece treats dilemmas as a celebration of modal cards. It says Seven wants cheap spells that trigger her card draw [5]. Black Market Connections is named as a card the writer would play regardless [5].
Landing Party precon and one Oracle change
The Star Trek Commander deck Landing Party releases Nov. 13, 2026. EDHREC has published a precon guide asking what's in it, who the commanders are and whether it's a good buy [2]. The excerpt we have doesn't answer those questions, so read the full guide before you decide [2].
The bulletin lists only one notable Oracle text change. It affects Werewolf Pack Leader from AFR [1]. Its last ability is unusual because it removes the Human type instead of adding or setting types, which can make it hard to tell what types the card has [1]. That also makes it hard to count its types, which matters for this release [1]. The excerpt cuts off before the new wording.

Commander corner
The practical takeaway is that creature types matter more with this set. Federation rewards a spread of types among non-Borg creatures, while the Borg remove types. If you play typal decks, check how your creatures' type lines interact with these cards, especially if you rely on changelings. Landing Party arrives Nov. 13, so more commander options are close.
